MEDIA RELEASE
Coomalie Shire Residents Invited to Share Vision for Rehabilitated Rum Jungle Lake
Atria Group, on behalf of the Coomalie Community Government Council, is inviting all Coomalie Shire residents and ratepayers to participate in the Rum Jungle Lake Borrow Pit Rehabilitation Community Consultation Project.
The purpose of the project is to seek the community’s vision for the best use of the land and the revenue generated from sale of the borrow pit material once the borrow pit extraction project is completed in 2030.
About the Site
The borrow pit is located on the Rum Jungle Lake recreation area on Poett Road, approximately 11.5km west of the town of Batchelor and approximately 7km to the south of the former Rum Jungle Mine. The proposed borrow pit is located on the site of the Rum Jungle Lake which is currently used as a recreation area. The land is 375 hectares of Freehold Title which is owned, managed and maintained by the Coomalie Council on behalf of the Coomalie Community.
About the Borrow Pit Project
The Northern Territory Government’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade will commence construction of a borrow pit to remove clay and other material from the site in late 2024, with full-scale extraction to commence in 2025. The extraction process is expected to take 5 years to complete and will likely be completed in 2030. After completion of the borrow pit project, the Coomalie Council has the opportunity to use the land, including the borrow pit and the surrounding land, to enhance the liveability of the local area.
About the Consultation
Atria Group has been appointed by the Coomalie Council to engage with the community to understand its vision for the Rum Jungle Lake site once the borrow pit is completed. In addition, Atria Group will seek advice from the community about the priorities for using the revenue expected from the sale of material from the borrow pit over the five-year project period.
Atria Group will be attending public events during the month of June 2024 in Batchelor, Adelaide River and Lake Bennett to engage with local people and seek feedback on the project.
The insights from the community consultation will help inform the Coomalie Council’s decision-making process about the best use of the site and the community’s priorities for using the revenue.
The Coomalie Shire community has the opportunity to help shape a better future for the Shire by participating in this project. The Coomalie Shire Council is encouraging everyone to participate and have their say about this significant opportunity.
Consultation closes Sunday 23 June 2024.
